Who is the Association of Nature Patriarchs in Italy

The Association was formed in 2006 by some naturalists Romagna who had long been engaged in the monitoring of monumental trees. The association pursues the protection of environmental and cultural heritage of the region through a key to the original, the "patriarchs arboreal" in fact, true monuments of nature that surround the rings of the wood the secret of longevity. With the Shareholders' Meeting of 30 December 2011, the Association amended the original statute and given the new legal status of "social promotion association" as defined by Articles 36 and following of the Civil Code, the Decree Legislative decree December 4 1997 n. 460 December 7, 2000 and Law no. 383. By virtue of this legislation has been registered at the social associations of the Province of Forl์-Cesena Ruling. 1357 of 14 June 2012.

The Association is governed by the President and relies on the contributions of members, mostly agronomists and nature of experience gained on environmental matters. Main activity of dissemination, research, documentation, promotion and enhancement of the environment and rural culture, with emphasis on the old trees of the country and all that is their "about", including history, culture and landscape of the territory and local communities. Particular attention is paid to the knowledge of the old fruit trees and the protection of biodiversity, rural, even for the conservation of old varieties and cultivars.

The Association's members and associates all over the country, the organization, which is headed by the Governing Council, makes use of references in the various provinces and regions of Italy so as to constitute a "network" of relationships: the "Network of the Patriarchs "relevant to the exercise of statutory purposes.

The main activities consist in the organization of conferences, seminars, thematic exhibitions, in carrying out research and surveys in the area, in the publication of articles, books and other information materials, collection of information and data, as well as in direct action to safeguard ancient trees in particular by raising awareness of the owners and public institutions charged to do so. The Association monitors the Italian veteran trees and in this regard manages an archive of the patriarchs arboreal of Italy, which is regularly updated and implemented.

And 'possible to request the Association to organize events related to these issues or to request the display material made.

Who are the great "patriarchs" of nature

The large trees have always played an important cultural significance among the different peoples: in fact, we see them protagonists of myths, cosmogonies, the core values, world views. Why is that? As living beings, became a symbol of the cosmos, the universe of things is understood as an organism: the rest of the trees today we recognize a kind of brain, and thus behavior, purpose. So were envisioned as the so-called cosmic trees, such as ash for the Germans in the North or the oak for the Celts. We also remember the sacred trees dedicated to the gods: always among the Germans, the oak god Odin, as among the Greeks to Zeus; lime to the goddess Freia. The trees also, and especially the most magnificent specimens of different species, made powerful by the substantial amount of time, the Patriarchs, therefore, suggestionarono our ancestors for stability, the size, the strength, the size of the trunk, the double role of telluric creatures, with roots in the innervated mother earth and heaven at the same time, with the canopy, the air in the sky.

In particular, the Patriarchs arboreal, silent rulers of the time, when human life is usually burned in the flash of fleeting youth and the incipient biological maturity, were confirmed and strengthened in the symbolic role of universality, of space, of being. The Patriarchs were arboreal symbol of such vitality, strength, wisdom, and represented the essence of life with the ability, which appeared in ancient supreme magic to transform sunlight and chemicals into oxygen and sugars, which are essential for animals, including humans. A tree is associated with the forest, in turn, a symbol of the cosmos and everything like that now demonized now sanctified according to the historical path and ideological man. Trees are certainly a source of health neuropsychic, with their green cloak that regulates the autonomic functions; with their fotodiffusione, message and a factor of balance and tone: the rest of the tradition to embrace the trees corresponds to the effect of their own radiant energy. (text of Plautus Dominic Battaglia).

The identity card of the "Patriarch"

This is taken to identify old trees, trees (and others) that can be considered the founders of our forests. Often these plants have exceptionally large, real monuments plant that, in addition to enhancing the landscape, preserving the memory of important events that happened in the past centuries. In other cases, the size is more modest and less striking but not their value is less. Indeed, there are plants which, within their species or the environment in which they live, are of an exceptional nature. It 's the case, for example, those specimens belonging to plant species that normally have appearance of shrubs or small trees, which by virtue of their seniority achieved unusually large. Consider, for example, to those plants typical of the Mediterranean scrub or undergrowth that make up the horizon shrubs, fruit plants or even perennial herbs or succulents, unique and rare high biological value.

The Association of the Patriarchs of Nature years studying this wonderful world of plants, collecting documents and information on older trees in Italy and doing things for the protection and improvement of knowledge of this extraordinary natural heritage. By the time a file was created, which is updated periodically, which are now stored about 6,000 plants considered of great interest due to their characteristics of age, size, rarity or because of the high scientific value, ecological, historical or landscape. Not all trees surveyed are included in the archive, there are selection criteria that the Association has identified and which take into account a variety of factors.

The National Archive of the Patriarchs plant

In the census, and in its archive, as an association of the patriarchs of nature we have set, we include plants that in some way are considered of value according to our selection criteria or other institutions or associations have added surveys or measures safeguard.

This research stems from the observation that, to date, has never been made a general store that would collect all available information on the monumental plants and / or trees in Italy.

Our starting point is the data collected and published by the State Forestry (with the census started in 1982), which amounted to about 1,500 trees. The CFS reported at the time that the reports received amounted to a total of about 22,000 plants; There is, however, that this list has ever been made that, in the construction of our database, we worked only on an update of the available data, implemented after all other sources of information to which it had access.

In fact, since the mid-70s of last century, following the establishment of the Regions, various censuses were started on a local level (regions, provinces, municipalities, etc.), often associated with measures of protection of the individual specimens.

There are also many fans who have published their work in the census, Particular note must be pioneers in this field, as Franco Tassi, Valid Capodarca, Louis Scaccabarozzi. The Association of the Patriarchs Nature draws, therefore, all the information of which is familiar, integrated and updated by field research carried out directly by the shareholders and its employees.

The data collected in the archive are made compatible as possible and consistent and relate to the identification of the species, its location (where possible integrated with geographic coordinates), the dimensional measurements, the apparent age, the status of vegetation, any relations with historical events, artistic, cultural or environmental.

Of each report also indicates the source and the year in which the survey was conducted.

In order to make the data more manageable, each plant is given a category of interest, calculated on the basis of certain criteria that has been established. Therefore, the long list of patriarchs arboreal can be divided into four categories of value that can be:

Level I (International), tree size and age among the highest in the world reached by the species (eg. Chestnut Tree of One Hundred Horses - Sant'Alfio CT) or even trees of particular historical

level N (National), trees do not belong to the upper class but whose age and / or size is among the largest reached by the species in Italy

A level (regional), trees that do not belong to the higher classes, but of considerable size within the region and / or that are identified and protected by national measures and regional laws

level L (local). trees do not belong to the higher classes but size and age uncommon and significant at the local level, even considering the relative rarity of large trees in the area where vegetate (eg. intensive areas, urban areas and / or industries where there is little or nothing about the presence of mature trees and / or trees).

Currently the percentage ratios between the different categories are roughly as follows:

Trees Value International (I): 2.8%

Trees of National value (N): 13.7%

Trees of Regional value (R): 51.8%

Trees of Local value (L): 31.3%
